Check Your Tyre Pressure Regularly

If you love the feel your bicycle provided when you first threw your leg across the Top Tube and headed off down the road then the easiest way to preserve that feeling is to check your tyre pressures regularly. Bicycle Tyres, on road bikes in particular, run at much higher pressures than your car and at a fraction of the wall thickness of a car tyre they loose pressure straight through the tyre wall.
The recommended Tyre pressure for any tyre is generally embossed on the side wall of the tyre and expressed as a range of upper and lower pressure ( min 90 - max 120 psi) So somewhere in that range should allow the tyre to perform as it was designed efficiently and safely. The final pressure you settle on is best chosen after you have experimented at different levels. The higher the pressure usually provides more speed at the expense of some comfort, however on some rougher surfaces higher pressures can loose efficiency due to "skipping" as the tyre leaves the road surface and rotates without traction. For me I like to ride at about 100 to 110 psi, and I check the tyres before every ride. This helps prevent punctures and gives me a consistent ride quality and performance every time, its just me that becomes the variable.
Of course maintaining tyre pressure depends on having a good floor pump with a guage. Most pumps these days come fitted with a "Smart Head" that allows no fuss connection with both Presta and Shrader valve types, try to choose a pump that is rated at 150 psi or above, this will make the job easy and quick, and minimise the upper body workout.

Now in its seventh year, the Wilson HTM Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge continues to be Queensland's biggest bike ride.

Dust off your bike and challenge yourself to this 100km ride from city to sea. The Wilson HTM Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge traditionally started in South Brisbane and exclusively used the South East Busway to Eight Mile Plains, travelling through Eagleby, Logan, Beenleigh, Coomera, Helensvale, Hope Island and through to the Gold Coast finish site at Southport. 2011 will see the ride finish at the new Broadwater Parklands.
