Tech Report

SRAM Apex

SRAM started making road groupsets 5 years ago with SRAM Rival being the entry level.  Now SRAM is introducing a new groupset that will directly compete against Shimano's 105 called SRAM Apex.  SRAM apex will borrow quite a few features from the rest of the SRAM groupset range including DoubleTap brake and shift levers, Zero Loss shifting and exact actuation.

Continuing to embrace the compact crankset concept SRAM (standard cranks are also available) will also offer a new 11-32 PG-1050 10-speed cassette.  Such a wide range of gears will surely be a very alluring option for those people still wanting to ride triple chainrings.  The cassette will also be offered in 11-23, 11-26 and 11-28 variants, with users given the appropriate length of rear derailleur to suit.

In 2010 Apex was born and at the Giro d’Italia Team Astana captain Alexandre Vinokourov raced with a SRAM Apex rear derailleur and 11-32t cassette to an 8th place finish on the stage. Even more remarkable was the performance of the other Apex rider in the race. AG2R rider John Gadret stormed to 3rd place on the stage surprising everyone with his leg spinning performance.

For the weight conscience out there the SRAM Apex groupset will weigh in at 2435 grams which is 105 grams lighter than Shimano's 105 set.
